Total Performance has together with Classic Racing Sweden once again been at Nürburgring in Germany, this year twice. First AvD OGP 2010 and then the ADAC 1000km race.
The Avd OGP this year was a great event with happy guests and great racing.
The Galaxie did race in the 3 hours Marathon race on Nordschleife and GP track. We got technical problems after 2 hours and 45 minutes but that is the longest race we had ever done, until the ADAC race described below was completed... :o)
ADAC 1000 km / 7 hours
The weekend of 11th September 2010 was revived at last it's tough 1000km race that combines both the Nordschleife and the full Grand Prix track.
On the start line were 100 cars with a blend from -60, -70 and -80.
Total Performance was on the line up with our race Galaxie and two exited drivers, Thomas Henrysson and Peter Kaiser. Both Thomas and Peter have many years experience of the dreaded "Nordschleife", but not under the extreme conditions that can be expected when to take a Galaxie from 1963 through 7 hour race. The race was, as expected, extremely eventful for the first 3 hours of sun and summer heat and the final four hours with heavy fog and pouring rain, typical for Eifel mountains. Summer and sunshine are very nice for all the spectators but not so good for a Galaxie that both chew the tires and brakes, as if there were an unlimited supply. With 1650kg and rear drum brakes, the fog and rain was a godsend. Ofcourse increases the risks on the track but with lower temperature in the tires and brakes and with drivers who like tough challenges the Galaxie was a fantastic car in these conditions.
However, we had to go the last hour with no brakes - no time to change. Fortunately, there are of course Armco railing and a Galaxie with a lot of sheet metal that works well as Crash Zone. There were a couple of visits outside the asphalt and the Galaxie do not look quite the same as when it started. This stopped, however, not a Big Block Galaxie from crossing the finish line and take the checkered flag at full race pace after seven hours in the Eifel mountains.
A feat that has never been made .... That we also won our class, and distanced all Mustangs with light-years did not make things worse.
And we also like that we got the one and only honorary award that was handed out in this exclusive race.
All team members are thrilled to have really top-performing and winning at the world's longest and toughest races in the Historic Racing in modern times.
